Taranaki Cathedral has two bodies, which oversee and govern it – the Parish Vestry and the Cathedral Chapter.

Members of the Vestry are elected and appointed by parishioners at the annual general meeting, held in March each year.  This group of six representatives works with the Dean on matters of general concern and importance in the parish including mission, finance, buildings, pastoral care, evangelism and social issues. Sub groups of Vestry cover specialist areas such as finance, communications, worship and property and maintenance.

St Mary’s ministry as a Cathedral is overseen by the Chapter.  Chapter has a responsibility to ensure that St Mary’s is a place for everyone; a church that serves the city and the province and is the seat of the Bishop of Taranaki. It supports the Bishop’s ministry within the building and across the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki and all the communities within it.
