St George’s is a historic wooden church listed as a Category A heritage building by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. It is notable for a soaring roof, bell tower and rich timber interior. It was designed by Frederick de Jersey Clere, an architect who designed Gothic Revival churches around NZ. Work began on the church in 1885. Extensive renovations were undertaken in 1957-58 and again in 2010.
