John Medland, settler, and his wife Grace were married at Holdsworthy, Devon in 1841. They came to New Plymouth in the Amelia Thompson, the second ship to arrive. John was a clerk to Captain King and an early member of the St Mary's Choir. Their daughter married G.F. Robinson*, both of whom are commemorated on a tablet in the Church.
*(not to be confused with George Robinson the builder of St Mary's)
Sacred to the memory of John Medland who died February 13th 1862 aged 54 years. Also of GRACE GLOYEN MEDLAND his wife who died July 4th 1894 aged 81 years. Unto Thee O Lord do I lift up my soul |
