Samuel Newell arrived with his sister Eliza on the St Michael in 1852. Samuel was an inn keeper owning the Masonic Hotel. He married Georgina George at St Mary’s in 1856. Their daughter Helen died of cholera in 1861.
This headstone is one of several which have been repaired by bonding broken parts to a stainless steel backing plate.
