Thomas Millard was a private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry company attached to HMS Niger. He was killed at the Battle of Waireka . The original wooden grave marker is now in the collection of Puke Ariki museum

Aged 33 years

Though gone, his memory's ever dear,
to friends & shipmates far & near,
his country, called him to attend,
which brought this mortal life to end.


Turn from the contemplation of the sod,

And think on him whose spirit rests with god


This slab was erected by his
comrades, of R.M. of
HMS Niger as a token of
their esteem for departed worth

This memorial, which replaces the original
wooden headboard now in the Taranaki
Museum, was erected by the New Zealand Government in May 2000
