Sapper George Chubb, R.E. was one of five british soldiers killed defending the incomplete No. 3 Redoubt (part of Pratt's Sap towards Te Arei pā) at Huirangi on the morning of 23rd January 1861. According to reports, Chubb struck a match in order to see to tie his bootlaces, revealing himself to a Māori warrior who had infiltrated the trench, and was shot dead as a result. The redoubt was under attack by warriors from the Waikato and Taranaki (Ngāti Haua, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Mahuta and Te Āti Awa). More than 40 Māori warriors are buried in a mass grave at Huirangi. [1][2][3]
